Celebrating National Fishing and Boating Week

Join the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in celebrating National Fishing and Boating Week. This annual event recognizes two of America’s favorite pastimes, as well as the contributions fishing and boating make to our lives, and to our nation’s economy. From memorable moments on the water with friends and family, to creating jobs and rebuilding fish stocks, fishing and boating benefits millions of Americans and American communities.

As the Secretary said in his speech at the National Marine Manufacturers Association 2019 American Boating Congress last month, “We want many more Americans to enjoy our most abundant resource: our oceans, lakes, and waterways. At Commerce, we are actively supporting a vibrant and innovative American boating and fishing industry.”

NOAA’s work on and off the water helps support our nation’s thriving “blue economy” which contributes billions of dollars each year to coastal states and territories. Our most recent estimates show that saltwater recreational fishermen spend approximately $30 billion each year on fishing trips and durable goods, such as boats and trailers. This spending by fishermen supports more than 470,000 American jobs.
